The Founders of EL BAT – A Legacy Forged in Lead, Hard Work, and Vision

There are stories that are not only told — they are felt.EL BAT is one of those stories. A story about two men who dared to begin when the times were hardest.A story of friendship, perseverance, and faith — one that turned an idea into an industry, and an industry into a legacy.

Dimitar Popov and Nikolay Bazhlekov did not simply build a company — they built direction.
A direction EL BAT has been following for more than three decades.

Today, as the company stands as an international symbol of sustainability and trust, its roots remain deeply tied to these two men — different in character, yet united by the same purpose and unwavering dedication.

The Beginning: Faith That Changed the Course

The early 1990s were a time when courage was worth more than capital.
It was then that two former classmates decided to trust their instincts and do something few would dare — to create a company dedicated to lead-acid battery recycling.
It was not just a business decision; it was a life choice — one defined by responsibility, hard work, and vision.

“When I started a family at just 22, it became my main motivation to start my own business and give everything I had to ensure a good life for them,” recalls Dimitar Popov.
“They gave me the strength to keep going. It’s still the same today.”

From the very beginning, the two shared something rare in business — trust.
Not written in contracts, not measured in shares, but a silent understanding that the other would stand beside you when things became difficult.

“We were young and we believed in ourselves. That helped us a lot,” says Nikolay Bazhlekov.

It was that belief — simple yet powerful — that pushed them forward even when there was no clear path ahead.

The Years of Hardship

They didn’t start with advantages — they started with risk.
Before them stood an entire reality: uncertainty, lack of resources, and heavy bureaucracy.
But instead of stepping back, they chose the hardest, yet most meaningful road — to build something of their own, something independent and lasting.

“The road has almost always been thorny,” admits Popov.
“In those difficult times — politically and socially — we faced immense bureaucracy that would have discouraged many. The limited resources we started with were also a major challenge. But we had determination — and thanks to that, we made it through everything.”

His words sound like a lesson for any entrepreneur:
don’t stop when things seem hopeless — move forward because you believe in the meaning, not the circumstances.

“Giving up was never an option,” says Bazhlekov.
“Whatever happened, we kept fighting.”

This is the moment when the spirit of EL BAT was born — not just to survive, but to prove itself.

Building the Company: Foundations That Don’t Rust

Over time, their idea began to take shape.
EL BAT grew not because of favorable conditions, but despite the unfavorable ones.
Both founders poured into the company not only their expertise, but their integrity — the belief that every success must be shared, and that nothing lasting is built without the people behind it.

“Perseverance and consistency — thanks to them we built the company from scratch,” says Popov.
“And to make that a reality, you need a stable and reliable team — that’s the strongest pillar.”

“Cohesion, dedication, and diligence — that applies not only to us, but to the entire team moving forward with us,” adds Bazhlekov.
“The most valuable resource of any business is its people. Professionalism has a cost, but for us, the priority is for people to feel fulfilled.”

These words hold the philosophy that has guided EL BAT for more than thirty years.
For them, success has never been individual — it has always been collective.
Every milestone achieved by the company is shared with every person who helped build it.

“Communication is the key,” says Popov.
“When there’s mutual trust, things work. Continuity is crucial — those who have been with us from the start pass on their knowledge to the new generation.”

Decisions That Changed the Direction

Every company has moments that define its future.
For EL BAT, one such turning point came in 2008 — a year when the world faced economic crisis, yet Popov and Bazhlekov chose to invest instead of pause.

“The expansion in 2008, with the construction of the new plant, was the hardest but most valuable decision,” shares Popov.
“We introduced the latest technologies and equipment, modernized the process, and increased capacity. It was a big risk — but every entrepreneur knows that risk and business go hand in hand.”

“Many of our decisions have been difficult, but that one was the most important,” adds Bazhlekov.
“Thanks to it, EL BAT moved to the next level.”

These choices transformed EL BAT from a national enterprise into an international player.
The company began exporting not just products, but standards — standards of responsibility, professionalism, and transparency.

EL BAT as a Legacy

More than 30 years after their first steps, Dimitar Popov sees EL BAT as something that outlives generations.

“I’m very proud that my children chose to be part of EL BAT,” he says.
“They contribute wonderfully with their modern mindset and fresh ideas. Although I know how challenging this industry can be, I’m truly happy that they’re not afraid to dive into it.”

“The feeling is indescribable,” adds Bazhlekov.

This sense of continuity is not just familial — it’s symbolic of the resilience that EL BAT embodies and lives by.
The company is not only an enterprise; it’s a living legacy that connects past, present, and future.

Partnership and the Philosophy of Trust

After more than three decades of working side by side, the two founders still share the same vision.

Their answers today sound almost identical to what they might have said 30 years ago — proof that when the direction is right, it doesn’t change.

“My business partner and close friend Nikolay and I have built a very strong relationship of trust,” says Popov.
“We’ve gotten used to understanding each other with just a word. The greatest strength is reciprocity — each of us is good at certain things, and together we make a great team.”

“Having someone you can rely on is an immeasurable wealth,” adds Bazhlekov.

“It’s rare to find, and I think we’re both very lucky that life brought us together.”

This partnership — rooted in trust and mutual respect — is the true foundation upon which EL BAT continues to stand strong today.

Looking Ahead

Today, EL BAT is a symbol of growth, yet for both founders the future remains as important as the past.
They continue to think ahead — not just about preserving what’s been achieved, but about building upon it.

“I’m glad we managed to establish ourselves as a constantly growing enterprise,” says Popov.
“For the next 10, 20, or even 50 years, I expect us to maintain — or even accelerate — this pace. We never stop investing, and I believe we’re on the right path.”

“I believe the company will continue to grow at the same pace and strengthen its position not only in Europe but globally,” adds Bazhlekov.

Success Has a Name

Today, EL BAT is more than a factory — it’s a symbol of perseverance, professionalism, and humanity.
Its success carries the names of people who never sought fame, only results.

Of people who never chased quick wins, but built a future meant to last.

Dimitar Popov and Nikolay Bazhlekov are more than founders — they are living proof that true success is built with effort, faith, and trust.
EL BAT is what it is today because two men, over thirty years ago, believed they could make the world a little cleaner, more responsible, and better.

“If we serve as an example to even one person with a big dream — as we once had — then we’ve succeeded.”
