Behind every sample, analysis, and report in EL BAT’s laboratory stands more than just precision – there’s a person with a mission. One of those people is Maria Ilieva – a chemist, researcher, and an inspiring professional who embodies continuous growth and the drive to create meaningful results. Maria doesn’t just manage lab processes – she helped build them. Over a decade later, she continues to raise the bar at EL BAT with scientific rigor and human depth.
The Beginning of a Long-Term Mission
Maria joined EL BAT in 2011, recommended by a colleague just before the company opened its laboratory. The role required a background in chemistry, but Maria brought more than that: a love for science, a dedication to knowledge, and strong practical experience. She had worked as a lab technician in a chemical plant, a paper mill, and a wastewater treatment facility. Each role was preceded by hands-on production work – giving her valuable insight into industrial operations.
Her interview at EL BAT quickly turned into training. Instead of a conversation, she found herself in the middle of installing and launching the company’s first ICP-OES instrument – the beginning of a long and purposeful journey.
Building from the Ground Up
At that time, the laboratory was still under development. There were no established methods, no built-up internal expertise, and the processes were just beginning. This challenge became her motivation. Maria played a central role in equipping the lab, selecting the right consumables and reagents, and developing procedures tailored to EL BAT’s production.
In parallel, she completed a bachelor’s degree in chemistry in just two years, followed by a master’s in Instrumental Methods of Analysis. Today, she is a doctoral researcher at the Institute of Solid State Physics at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) – all while continuing her full-time work at EL BAT. Her academic journey proves that with the right mindset and support, anything is possible.
Built by Challenge
The biggest challenge in her work? The fast-paced dynamic environment. Staying organized, prioritizing correctly, and meeting deadlines are part of her daily rhythm. Add to that the interpersonal challenge of working with people of different temperaments—requiring empathy, diplomacy, and the ability to guide and collaborate at the same time.
One of her most powerful memories isn’t a single day, but a period: the launch of the Seri installation, when the entire team worked with purpose and passion. It wasn’t just a technical achievement – it was a shared moment of pride.
Inspiration, Trust, and Communication
Maria is proud of the positive environment in her team today. She values clear communication across departments as a foundation for timely and high-quality work. She is especially grateful to Engineer Ivan Iliev, who helped guide her in her early years with valuable knowledge and experience.
Thinking Ahead
The fact that EL BAT works in the field of sustainability and environmental protection is a source of genuine pride for Maria. For her, this isn’t just a corporate strategy – it’s a meaningful mission with a future.
What motivates her most? Trust – the opportunity to learn and grow, given to her by company leadership, including Mr. Popov and Mr. Bazhlekov. The support she has received over the years is the reason she continues to give her best every single day.
If she had to describe EL BAT in one word, it would be growth. Her own path within the company is living proof of that.
