EL BAT has officially become a member of the Family Business Network Bulgaria (FBN Bulgaria), joining a community of family-owned companies united by a long-term commitment to responsible entrepreneurship, continuity, and development across generations.

The membership marks a meaningful step for EL BAT as a family-owned industrial company with more than 30 years of history. Founded by Dimitar Popov and Nikolay Bazhlekov in the early 1990s, the company has grown from its beginnings in Bulgaria into an internationally operating lead-acid battery recycling and refined lead production business, while preserving the values and long-term perspective on which it was built.

Today, as the second generation takes an increasingly active role in the company’s development, becoming part of FBN Bulgaria creates a natural connection with other business families facing many of the same questions: how to preserve experience while embracing change, how to prepare the next generation for greater responsibility, and how to build companies capable of remaining relevant and resilient over decades.

A Community Built Around Continuity

FBN Bulgaria brings together family businesses from different industries around a shared commitment to developing and preserving family values and traditions while successfully transferring them to future generations.

Since its establishment in 2007, the organization has developed a community where business families can exchange experience, learn from one another, participate in educational initiatives, and discuss the challenges that are specific to building and managing a company across generations.

For EL BAT, this perspective is particularly relevant.

More than three decades after the company was founded, continuity is no longer an abstract idea. It is already part of its everyday development. The experience and industrial knowledge accumulated by the founders are increasingly complemented by the perspective of the second generation, while the company continues to expand its production, international partnerships, and long-term ambitions.

Becoming part of FBN Bulgaria therefore represents more than membership in another business organization. It provides an opportunity to exchange experience with other families that understand both the opportunities and the responsibilities that come with building a business intended to endure beyond its founders.

From a Bulgarian Family Business to an International Community

Through FBN Bulgaria, EL BAT also becomes connected to the wider international family business community.

The Family Business Network brings together thousands of business families across 65 countries, creating an environment for intergenerational learning and the exchange of experience between founders, current leaders, and future generations.

This international dimension reflects EL BAT’s own development. While the company remains family-owned and closely connected to the principles established by its founders, its business has become increasingly international. Today, the majority of its partnerships extend beyond Bulgaria, making the ability to exchange perspectives with family companies from different markets and industries particularly valuable.

Membership also opens opportunities for members of the EL BAT family to participate in FBN communities dedicated to different generations and areas of interest, including Next Generation, Now Generation, and initiatives focused on sustainable impact and responsible long-term development.

Building for the Next Generation

Family businesses carry a particular kind of responsibility. Decisions are rarely viewed only through the perspective of the next quarter or the next financial year. They also raise longer-term questions about what will be preserved, what must evolve, and what will eventually be passed forward.

This way of thinking has been part of EL BAT since its earliest years.

The company was built through persistence, trust, and a long-term commitment from its founders. Today, those foundations remain, while a new generation contributes new perspectives, technologies, international ambitions, and approaches to growth.

Joining FBN Bulgaria creates another environment in which this transition can continue — through dialogue with other family companies, access to international experience, and conversations with people who understand that continuity does not simply mean preserving what already exists. It also means preparing it for what comes next.

EL BAT sincerely thanks the Family Business Network Bulgaria, its Board of Directors, and its members for the warm welcome and for the trust shown in accepting our company into the organization.

We look forward to becoming an active part of the community, exchanging experience with other family businesses in Bulgaria and internationally, and contributing our own perspective as a family-owned industrial company that has been building, evolving, and looking ahead for more than three decades.
