For the first time, two companies were honoured at the prestigious Metallurgist’s Day celebration in Sofia for their production growth in 2023. EL BAT AD from Dolna Banya achieved an impressive 192% growth in non-ferrous metals, while “Promet” AD from Burgas recorded a 119% increase in rolled steel products. The awards were presented under the initiative of Nikola Rangelov, Chairman of the Bulgarian Association of the Metallurgical Industry (BAMI). EL BAT’s award was presented to Mr. Stanislav Popov, who emphasized that the company’s success is attributed to the visionary leadership and hard work of its dedicated employees.
The special event, held on November 5, 2024, was hosted under the patronage of the President of the Republic of Bulgaria, Rumen Radev. Among the distinguished guests were Deputy Minister of Economy and Industry, Dr. David Sukalinski, and representatives from the business and industrial sectors, who highlighted the critical role of the metallurgical sector in the country’s economic stability and green transition.
President Radev underscored the key role of metallurgy in ensuring national stability and its significant contribution to the Bulgarian economy.
- “European industry, the extractive industry, and metallurgy are at the heart of economic development and the EU’s pursuit of strategic autonomy,” he stated.
“Our companies are among the best in the world in terms of quality, environmental, and energy performance. The Green Deal is an opportunity, not a barrier for our sector,” said Nikola Rangelov, Chairman of the BAMI Management Board. Mr. Rangelov also highlighted Bulgaria’s leading position in Europe in metallurgical product production and the substantial investments being made in environmental and energy-efficient technologies.
“The outlook for the metallurgical sector is positive due to the growing demand for metals and new value-added products related to the transition to a low-carbon industry and digital transformation,” pointed out Deputy Minister Dr. Sukalinski.
During the event, four students from the University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy (UCTM) and the Technical University were recognized for their outstanding academic achievements. The certificates were personally awarded by President Radev.
The purpose of this annual event, held since 1963, is to celebrate the importance of generations of hardworking professionals who have contributed to the success and sustainable development of the metallurgical industry in Bulgaria, as emphasized by BAMI.
