Leadership with Vision: An Interview with Stanislav Popov on EL BAT’s Mission and the Future of Industry

Founded as a family-owned company, EL BAT has built its philosophy from the very beginning on values such as sustainability, continuity, and a deep sense of responsibility toward future generations. Over the years, the company has established itself as a technological leader in the fields of lead-acid battery recycling and metallurgy — thanks to strategic investments in innovation, a highly competent team, and a clear long-term vision.

To reflect on the journey so far — and the direction ahead — we sat down with Stanislav Popov, Deputy Chairman of the Management Board at EL BAT.

Mr. Popov, how would you describe EL BAT’s mission today, and how has it evolved over the years?

The mission of EL BAT has always been rooted in responsible resource management and sustainable development through lead-acid battery recycling and metal recovery. In the early years, our main focus was on production efficiency and building a strong operational foundation.

Over time, however, this mission has evolved — today, we’re not just talking about manufacturing, but about creating real value within the framework of the circular economy.

Our current ambition is to go beyond being a reliable producer. We strive to be a true industrial partner that brings transparency, innovation, and environmental responsibility across the entire value chain.

Behind this evolution lies a series of strategic decisions, culminating in the realization of the “Vision for Development 2022” project — an initiative through which EL BAT built an entirely new, modern, and future-oriented facility.

A facility that doesn’t merely meet industry standards — it sets them.

What does it mean to you personally to lead a company with such a significant role in both industry and sustainability?

It’s an honor — but also a great responsibility. Every day, I’m aware that the decisions we make extend far beyond economic outcomes. They have a direct impact on the environment, on the people we work with, and on the future of the communities we reach.

Leading a company like this means looking beyond short-term business goals and focusing on long-term value — value that remains long after us.

The company’s growth goes far beyond improvements in production. EL BAT also looks to the future through the lens of human capital.

The team is currently working on the development of the EL BAT Academy – an internal educational platform aimed at preparing the next generation of specialists in sustainable recycling and metallurgy.

In parallel, plans are underway for the creation of the EL BAT Foundation, dedicated to supporting children in vulnerable situations – a cause that lies at the heart of the company’s long-term commitment to corporate social responsibility.

What does success look like for EL BAT over the next 5 to 10 years?

For us, success is not measured solely in tons of processed metal or increased production capacity. True success means being a driving force of industrial transformation — one built on innovation, social responsibility, and long-term sustainability.

We aim to achieve even higher quality standards, minimize our environmental footprint, and foster strong, long-lasting partnerships. I also believe that EL BAT has the potential to play a leading role in the digitalization of industrial processes.

With this vision in mind, the company is boldly looking beyond national borders. We are currently working on establishing a direct presence in Italy and Germany, as well as building a new logistics center in Dolna Banya, Bulgaria. This facility will enhance supply chain coordination and streamline the flow of materials to and from our production sites.

I believe EL BAT has the potential to position itself as a strategic partner in the European and global sustainable metal supply chain. Our international role should not be limited to following regulations and trends — we aim to define them through technological innovation, transparency, and leadership in sustainability.

What are the short-term goals your leadership team has set?

We’ve set a clear and measurable target: a 20% increase in the volume of recycled batteries and lead production within the next two years — without compromising on quality or safety.

At the same time, we are developing technological solutions that will enable us to offer rare metals on open markets — a step that will open new commercial opportunities and further strengthen our position as an innovative and flexible industrial partner.

How do you maintain focus and motivation as a leader in the long run?

For me, motivation comes from the opportunity to create something of real value — economic, social, and environmental. Knowing that our work contributes to a better future is what drives me.

I stay focused by working with a team that shares these values and by setting goals that go beyond the company itself — goals that leave a meaningful legacy.

How do you handle difficult decisions — an inevitable part of leadership?

Every difficult decision requires balance — between reason, duty, and transparency. I always take the long view, weighing not only the immediate outcome but also the value it creates for the customer and the sustainability of the business.

The best decisions are made when data, ethics, and a human approach come together — that’s the philosophy I believe in and the one we apply at EL BAT.

Today, EL BAT is not just participating in industrial transformation — we are leading it.

With our sights set on the future, the company continues to build on what sets us apart: a combination of technological leadership, a people-centered approach, and long-term responsibility.
